My goal is to photograph the Beauty and the Majesty of Nature, both in wildlife and landscape. There is much beauty in the world around us and I want to share that with you.
Favorite Locations
I enjoy living in Colorado where I can photograph the majesty of nature: the mountain goats high on Mount Evans with their new winter coats, the aspen trees in the San Juan Mountains at the peak of their golden color, and the wildflowers in the high mountain valleys when they are in full bloom. Each July I travel to the San Juan Mountains to photograph the wildflowers in Yankee Boy Basin and American Basin. In late September I again return to photograph the Autumn Colors of the Aspens with the Majestic San Juan Mountains. In June I travel to the top of Mount Evans to photograph the female mountain goats with their newborn kids . I return around Labor Day to photograph the mountain goats with their winter coats and to catch the young kids that have grown up and are now playing “king of the mountain” with their siblings.
There are many other photographic opportunities throughout the Rocky Mountain West; Utah with Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyon Lands National Parks. Colorado also has Rocky Mountain and Sand Dunes National Parks. New Mexico has Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge and White Sands National Park. I try to visit these beautiful locations as often as possible.
From Engineer to Photographer
After graduation from Arizona State University with a degree in Engineering I moved to Colorado to work in the Aerospace Industry. For the past 40 years I have enjoyed the engineering challenges and my association with some very brilliant scientists in that arena. When not working I sought opportunities to hike and bicycle throughout the Colorado Mountains, to enjoy the beauty of nature.
During a three-year work assignment in Brazil I realized that the only way to record our activities as a family and to record the beauty of that country was through photography. It was then that my desire to record those images in the best possible way led to a study of photography, a study of the equipment and how to use that equipment and light to create a memory. How could one spend time in Rio de Janeiro and in the Amazon Jungle and not want to record those scenes? As I look back now at those images I took I realize that I was just beginning.
A few years ago I joined Focus Camera Club of Colorado and during the past two years I have been the club president. Gathering with like minded photographers has allowed me to hone my skills and increase my knowledge even further.
Combining My Talents
I look at a scene with both an artistic view and with an engineering view. As an artist I strive to compose an image to include the essential elements, to exclude the detracting elements and to do so in a way to draw other viewers into the scene. As an engineer I want to use the equipment at my disposal to record the image as I see it. Knowing the camera cannot record the same image that the human eye can see, I call upon my experience and expertise to capture all the color and detail possible. Used properly the camera can record the scene in a very artistic way.
Equipment and Techniques
I have used medium format and large format film cameras for many of my pictures, but as digital cameras have become better I have used them. While a 4×5 inch transparency from a large format camera can be enlarged to create a 48×60 inch print, a single image from a high end Nikon or Canon digital camera cannot be enlarged to that same size. In order to have the resolution necessary for bigger prints I often create large images by stitching together a number of smaller ones. The engineer in me kicks in to find viable solutions to photographic challenges.
